Released in 2000 and narrated by actor Rupert Everett, Paragraph 175 revealed the extent and consequences of the Nazi’s persecution of homosexuals, filling a crucial gap in the historical record of the Third Reich. A new restoration of this landmark documentary from the directors of Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt (screening here on February 28) offers another vital chance to hear the moving testimonies of the survivors interviewed for the film. This compelling tale of resistance raises provocative questions about memory, history, identity, and tolerance that still haunt us today. (81 mins., DCP)
This newly restored film is a perfect companion to both the Academy Award–winning Common Threads, and the Peter Hujar exhibition on view in our galleries.
