Philippe Leotard and Nathalie Baye star in The Mouth Agape as a couple who move to the country to care for his dying mother. In critic David Thomson's words, "The film quietly discovers drama in the most banal events and achieves an awesome balance between human misery and the fleeting moments of grace that make it bearable." (1974; 85 mins.)

The Maurice Pialat retrospective was organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center with the support of French Cultural Services (New York) and the Bureau du Cinema, Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, Paris.
