Double Feature

A Question of Silence is the first film from Marleen Gorris, the director of Antonia's Line and The Lurshin Defense. The Fourth Man is the last film Paul Verhoeven made before embarking for Hollywood.

Second feature start time: 8:40 pm. A feminist cause celebre when first released, Marleen Gorris's A Question of Silence still provokes fierce debate for suggesting that murder might be a justifiable response to male oppression. The story focuses on a female psychiatrist called in to determine the sanity of three ordinary Dutch women who've "senselessly" murdered a male clerk. (Marleen Gorris, 1982; 92 mins.)

Based on the novel by gay author Gerard Reve, The Fourth Man is the last film Paul Verhoeven made before embarking for Hollywood and Robocop, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, and Starship Troopers. It's an erotic thriller about a controversial writer and the webs of deceit and delusion he weaves. (Paul Verhoeven, 1983; 102 mins.)

The Human Dutch was conceived by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Nederlands Filmmuseum in association with the Consulate General of the Netherlands, Los Angeles. The program is presented with the support of the Dutch Cultural Fund.
