This mythical tale of longing follows the story of Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her fisherfolk grandparents after the death of her mother. Acclaimed filmmaker John Sayles's Roan Inish is a thoughtful and beautiful tale about lost heritage set in the gorgeous landscape of Ireland's West Coast. Fiona and her family are haunted by a sad longing for their traditional way of life on the isolated island of Roan Inish, which they left after the loss of Fiona's little brother, who was carried away to the sea in his cradle by seals. As Fiona explores the legend of the selkie, a mythical creature that swims as a seal but becomes a woman on land, she resolves to coax her grandparents back home to the island. (103 mins.)

Recommended for ages 9 and up.
