Adapted from Miguel Piñero’s award-winning play, Short Eyes (prison slang for a child molester) is set in a New York City prison and follows the volatile dynamic created when a white pedophile arrives amidst the otherwise black and Puerto Rican inmates. Soul legend Curtis Mayfield created the score and performs “Do Do Wap (Is Strong in Here)” as one of the prisoners. Starring Bruce Davison, José Pérez, and Nathan George. Piñero's play was nominated for six Tony Awards and received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play. (100 mins., 35mm)

Piñero was a longtime friend of artist Martin Wong and this screening is presented in conjunction with our spring exhibition, Martin Wong: Human Instamatic. Our thanks to Robert M. Young for his assistance with this screening.

See Radiohead’s latest video, Daydreaming (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2016), in 35mm before this screening. The Wex is one of a limited number of venues in the country to receive a print of this much-talked-about new video.
