Standing among the great independent films of the 1990s, To Sleep with Anger portrays a middle-class family in South Central Los Angeles whose lives are upended with the arrival of their old friend Harry (Danny Glover) from the South. (102 mins., 2K DCP)
Amid the controversy swirling around Nate Parker’s Nat Turner biopic The Birth of a Nation, many suggested seeing Burnett’s hybrid documentary on Turner instead. Burnett drew from numerous sources (including two dozen historians) in creating this multifaceted portrait of the Virginian who led a slave rebellion in 1831. (60 mins., BetaSP)
