The Syrian Bride

Eran Riklis, 2004

Set in the occupied Golan Heights, The Syrian Bride follows Mona (Clara Khoury), an Arab woman of the Druze religion about to be married to a Syrian soap opera star on the other side of the Israeli-Syrian border. Once she crosses, she will never be allowed to return, forcing her to leave her family behind. The film has won more awards than any previous Israeli film despite the prejudice it has met in Israel, because of the subject matter. It has also dealt with biases from the Arab world, because it was produced in Israel (despite the fact that the coscreenwriter and almost the entire cast is Palestinian). (97 mins.)

Amy Horowitz, research associate in folklore and music at Ohio State's Melton Center for Jewish Studies, leads a postscreening discussion.

Cosponsored by Ohio State's Melton Center for Jewish Studies.
