Along with partner Aubrey “Po” Powell, with whom he founded the London-based design firm Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson created some of the most iconic (and surreal) album covers in music history, including Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy to name just two from 1973. In pushing the boundaries between art and commerce, Thorgerson has eschewed high-tech practices and relied on such real-life approaches as constructing and photographing often-elaborate staged events, site-specific sculptures, and tableaus. One notable example: for the cover of Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), Thorgerson’s team placed 765 iron beds on a beach. Taken by Storm follows Thorgerson’s 40-year career, featuring interviews with such clients and collaborators as David Gilmour, Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, and others. Bogawa’s diverse filmography includes Some Divine Wind (1991), Junk (1999), and I Was Born, But... (2004). (95 mins., DCP)
