Thamp

(Govindan Aravindan, 1978)

New Restoration

Black-and-white still of a group of Indian people on the beach, including five standing children and an older man who sits in front of them with his arms crossed on his knees.

This award-winning film from pioneering director Govindan Aravindan is a lyrical and mesmerizing black-and-white classic of Indian cinema.

From the director of last year’s Cinema Revival favorite Kumatty, Thamp is a loosely structured, observational film about a traveling circus troupe that spends three days near a small riverside village in southwest India. Forgoing a conventional narrative, Aravindan instead dwells on the day-to-day lives of the circus members and villagers, the landscapes and buildings, and the performances of the troupe. Near the end of the film, a young man frustrated by the pace of village life must decide if he will join the soon-to-depart troupe or embrace the familiar. (129 mins., 4K DCP)
