(Orson Welles, 1958)
Free for all audiences
Consistently ranked among the best films of all time, Orson Welles’s final Hollywood hurrah is a sleazy and entertaining film-noir portrait of corruption and morally questionable obsessions. Presented here in a meticulous, posthumous reconstruction of Welles’s “director’s cut,” the film features Welles as a crooked police chief who frames a Mexican youth as part of an intricate criminal plot. The film boasts one of the most famous opening shots in cinema history, eminently quotable dialogue, a magnificent Henry Mancini score, and an unforgettable all-star cast including Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Akim Tamiroff, and Dennis Weaver. (112 mins., 35mm)
