Our summer film series kicks off with Jacques Demy's story of young love strarring Catherine Deneuve and featuring an unforgettable score by Michel Legrand.

Join us for a free reception after the screening in Mershon Auditorium lobby. A worldwide hit that made a star of Catherine Deneuve, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the story of a young girl who falls in love with a gas station mechanic only to have their romance interrupted by the war in Algeria. The twist? Every line of dialogue is sung by the film's characters to the memorable score by Michel Legrand. Director observations of quotidian French life are beautifully heightened by the vividly colorful costumes and locales (the residents of Cherbourg agreed to have sections of their city painted for the film).
