The Way Things Go

Peter Fischli and David Weiss, 1988, Switzerland

wex grid image fill

The Way Things Go by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss is as appealing to preschoolers as to art world sophisticates.

The film captures an elaborate Rube Goldberg-like explosive sculpture, as a spectacular half-hour-long chain reaction sends common objects combusting, collapsing, and igniting into one another through an abandoned warehouse. The remarkably creative use of chemistry, gravity, and physics turns tea kettles, tires, old shoes, trash bags, and other ordinary items into dramatic players in a suspenseful and riveting lesson in cause and effect. Throughout this weekend, we will be showing the “making of” documentary MakingThings Go in the Box video exhibition space in the lower lobby. (30 mins., 16mm)
