Wild Strawberries

(Smultronstället, Ingmar Bergman, 1957)

Black and white photo of an older male actor and younger female actress sitting in a car.

An enduring work of world cinema, Wild Strawberries follows an aging professor as he travels with his daughter-in-law to receive an honorary degree. Through flashbacks, fantasies, and one of film’s great dream sequences, the professor faces his past and comes to terms with his failings. The richly humane film features moving performances by Victor Sjöström (a major filmmaker of the silent era and a mentor to Bergman), as well as Ingrid Thulin, Bibi Andersson, and Gunnar Björnstrand. (92 mins., 35mm)

"An archetypal Ingmar Bergman film, and one of his best."
