A Woman Under the Influence

John Cassavetes, 1974

Gena Rowlands gives one of the all-time great screen performances in this landmark of American independent film production.

She plays a dutiful, working-class housewife whose increasingly erratic behavior causes her husband (Peter Falk) to institutionalize her. Director John Cassavetes (Rowlands's husband) was particularly noted for the sensitive and nuanced performances in his fims. A Woman Under the Influence is perhaps the finest example.
