Six of the planet's most punishing professions are featured in this riveting documentary. Just announced as winner of the Golden Gate Award for best documentary feature at this year's San Franscisco International Film Festival! Austrian filmmaker Michael Glawogger's epic-scale documentaries pull together grand global themes in unexpected ways. In Workingman's Death, he showcases six of the most grueling and dangerous professions he could find. His goal is to show the workers as uniquely heroic, performing the jobs the rest of the world scorns: from coal mining in the Ukraine and slaughtering animals in Nigeria to junking old oil tankers by hand on the beaches of Pakistan. The film at once provides a rejoinder to those predicting the end of manual labor and a ground-level lesson in globalization. (120 mins., 35mm) Please note: Patrons are advised that tonight's film includes a 20-minute scene of animal slaughter.
