Mission, Vision, and Views

Mission

Ignite and cultivate creative curiosity that fuels artistic inquiry.

The Wexner Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary resource for contemporary culture based on The Ohio State University’s main campus. Since its founding in 1989, it has evolved into a cultural force with both citywide impact and global recognition.

Through exhibitions, film screenings, performances, learning programs, talks, moving image residencies, and the preservation of our collections, the Wex sparks ideas and cultivates critical dialogue. While its iconic Peter Eisenman– and Richard Trott–designed building is its home, the Wex’s influence extends across and beyond the city, acting as a platform for artistic exploration and community connection.

Vision

Shape Columbus into the new contemporary arts center of the Midwest.

By acting as a bridge between the global contemporary art world and the cultural growth of the region, the Wex enriches Ohio State’s campuses and advances a vision of creativity, curiosity, and cultural exchange for Columbus’s communities.

In the broader Midwest context, the Wex stands as a destination for contemporary culture. Its mission places it as a center of artistic excellence and exploration—drawing artists and audiences from across the region and beyond. It plays a vital role in shaping a distinctive cultural identity for the Midwest, one that is creative, ambitious, and globally connected.

Views

The Wexner Center for the Arts is privileged to exhibit artwork in many forms by a wide range of artists. While the center is committed to its mission, it is important to understand that the views expressed by the artists through their work are their own and do not represent the views of the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Wexner Center Foundation, its trustees, or The Ohio State University. An exhibition, performance, film, talk, or any artist’s work shown within the center is not to be construed as approval or endorsement of the artist’s publications, activities, actions, or positions.

Impact

“The Wexner Center for the Arts has one of the most dynamic contemporary programs in the country.”—Washington Post

Over the past 35 years, the Wexner Center has become an essential cultural and educational resource, helping to spark the evolution of Columbus as a more open, progressive, and sophisticated place to live, work, and play. We support artists in the creation and presentation of new work in all media, providing unparalleled arts experiences to diverse audiences. As a nexus for cultural research, production, and experience—and as a platform for the exchange of ideas—the center is a vital agent for social change.
