Ohio Premiere

A gray-haired man with his back to the camera walks down a round metal underground tunnel.

Filmmaker Jenny Perlin visits for the Ohio premiere of Bunker, a fascinating documentary about men living in decommissioned nuclear silos and underground bunkers across the Midwest.

Produced with support from the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Studio, Bunker follows American men who are increasingly deciding to live in solitary hideouts as fears of societal collapse have created a market for doomsday “preppers.” Independent filmmaker Jenny Perlin travels alone to meet some of these men, as well as the builders and salesmen who cater to them, examining American myths surrounding individualism, masculinity, and security in a time when climate, economic, and political crises abound. Revealing the pathology of this rising American phenomenon, the project originated from an idea Perlin had when filming inside Ohio Caverns while in the area for a screening at the Wex in 2015. (92 mins., DCP)
