A John Cage Musicircus

Six percussionists play a variety of instruments in a gallery setting.

Take part in what iconic American composer John Cage called a Musicircus, featuring the Ohio State Percussion Ensemble and School of Music guests.

Ahead of Available Light Theater’s John Cage 101 performance, join us for this immersive, overlapping musical collage—or happening—presented in a live, surround-sound environment, far removed from a traditional concert format. This program includes more than a dozen of John Cage’s chamber compositions, performed over the course of an hour in multiple locations. Attendees can freely move throughout the performances, creating their own experiences.

"...seen from a particular point of view, music is simply the art of focusing attention on one thing at a time. In my works, I have tried not to focus the attention on one thing at a time, and have used this principle that I call ‘musicircus’-of having many things going on at once; the simultaneity of unrelated intentions."
John Cage
