"V is...one of the few great works that modern dance has produced in a decade."--New York Times Welcome back one of America's foremost choreographers and dance companies, here performing Morris's recent work including V, which is already being hailed as a masterpiece. Set to music by Robert Schumann, V cascades across the stage with jubilant bursts of pure dancing and contemplative passages evoking images of deep human connections. The title refers to the Roman numeral 5 and the quintet of musicians playing its touching score; the V-shaped formations of the dancers, moving like birds in flight; and now, retroactively, to a proud V-for-Victory, since the company has dedicated the work to New York City. As the New York Times notes, "feeling is breathed into form throughout" the piece, creating "a testament to the human spirit." Tonight you'll also see Mark perform his latest tour-de-force solo, plus more work for the company including the entertaining Resurrection, a Busby Berkeley-style gangster-and-moll romp set to Richard Rodgers's jazzy score for Slaughter on Tenth Avenue. The Mark Morris Dance Group's sophisticated artistry has proven to be a lasting joy for Columbus dance lovers. Don't miss the company's return with this warmly heartfelt work, an emotionally satisfying artistic triumph.
