"He takes a painterly approach to sound...evocative, darkly shaded and impressionistic."-- JazzTimes A key player on the European jazz scene and master of a sublime atmospheric sound, Polish trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stanko regularly draws comparisons to Chet Baker and to Miles Davis in the Kind of Blue era. His keen lyricism and striking contrasts between meditative passages and flares of emotion also show the influence of his mentor, the brilliant Polish film composer and jazz artist Krzysztof Komeda, best known for the Rosemary's Baby soundtrack. These important figures have certainly informed Stanko's vivid moodscapes. Yet, in the end, it's his consistent inventiveness and the virtuosity of his first-rate band that stay with you. As Billboard put it, "Few jazz recordings, on either side of the Atlantic, are being made with this much poetry." image credits (1) Tomasz Stanko Quartet left to right: Michal Miskiewicz: drums Tomasz Stanko: trumpet Slawomir Kurkiewicz: double-bass Marcin Wasilewski: piano Photo: Andrzej Tyszko / ECM Records (2) Tomasz Stanko Quartet Photo: © Luciano Rossetti / ECM Records (3) Tomasz Stanko Photo: Andrzej Tyszko / ECM Records
