Akron/Family with Greg Davis and Megafaun Fri, Sept 21 | 8 PM
Wexner Center Performance Space
$12 all audiences
“You never know when you’ll have your mind blown.”—Washington Post
Highly focused on being loose-knit, the collective known as Akron/Family takes the road less traveled in more ways than one. The group left its rural roots (none of the four guys hails from Akron, by the way) to make a go of it in Brooklyn’s netherworld, where their notions of magical, ecstatic folk-skronk quickly found an appreciative home. Embraced by the leftfield crew at Young God Records for their fractal lo-fi sonic epics, Akron/Family is soon to issue its latest CD, Love us Simple. Fellow travelers on this tour include Greg Davis, who performs a solo set, and the trio Megafaun, who will all be adopted into Akron/Family for their extended set. The Blow with Saturday Looks Good To Me Tue, Oct 2 | 9 PM
Black Box on Mershon Stage
“A wickedly generous and clever record of not-quite love songs....”—Pitchfork
Portland, Oregon continues to serve as a major spawning ground for the indie scene, and folktronica-forward The Blow is one of the foremost recent examples to show its primacy. The Blow is once again a showcase for the talents of Khaela Maricich (since the departure of Jona Bechtolt, who is concentrating on his own band YACHT) and continues to serve up leftfield twists with sly lyrics and minimalist dance funk for the emo set. Listen to the Blow’s latest K Records release, Paper Television, to hear deft metaphors for our age, like this from the standout track “Parentheses,” as a lovesick couple drifts in the supermarket aisles: “Some philosophies fuel a belief in the self/Constructed to keep one’s goods on the shelf.” More info: www.theblowus.com and www.slgtm.com.
BORIS and Damon & Naomi with Kurihara Fri, Oct 5 | 9 PM
$16 all audiences
“Japan's most consistently face-melting, soul-stirring artists intersect...Kurihara expanding Boris' reach with his gauzy, moody fretwork.”—Pitchfork
Japanese mega-rock trio BORIS blew the roof off our black box space when they appeared here with drone masters SunnO))). Now they return with another special event, joining forces with psychedelic guitar god Michio Kurihara of Ghost fame, as well as like-minded collaborators Damon & Naomi from Boston. Expect hazy, hypnotic pyrotechnics and amped up sonic lightning of the highest order, plus a few detours into gentler shimmering psych-folk. Preview the sounds on BORIS and Kurihara’s recent multihued release, Rainbow. More info: www.inoxia- rec.com/boris/ and www.damonandnaomi.com
Over the Rhine with Griffin House Sat, Oct 6 | 9 PM
“(They) create a slow burn ambience wherein enchanting melodies and languid tempos take hold.”—No Depression
Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the Cincinnati-based couple who are the core of Over the Rhine, have just released The Trumpet Child, another outstanding collection of burnished and heartfelt new songs. Alt-country accents again figure prominently in their polished song craft, and Bergquist’s exquisite, jazz-tinged vocals continue to captivate listeners. As All Music Guide puts it, “She has always been subtle, but she manages to underscore the maximum emotional intent by relying on nuance...she leaves unnecessary weight outside the song’s frame.” Up-and- coming Cincinnati singer/songwriter Griffin House opens the show. Grizzly Bear with Beach House Thu, Oct 11 | 9 PM
$14 all audiences
“Last night I saw the best show I have ever seen in my life.”—Local Cut, Portland
Grizzly Bear, the melodic Brooklyn quartet who’ve found a home at Warp Records, amazes on stage with live renditions of the meticulously crafted tunes that light up its highly praised CDs. Expertly riding the fence between perfectionist impulses and lo-fi offhand moves (just as sublime in their own way), Grizzly Bear creates lyrical moodscapes with woozy harmonies and adventurously ambitious instrumental flourishes. Hear what Tiny Mix Tapes described as “cinematic indie pop pastures that cannot be contained by anyone’s mom’s living room.” In the opening set, Baltimore duo Beach House provides the perfect complement with its dreamy trance pop sound.
