U.S. Premiere Hey Girl! Evokes Mystery & Power of Women in Stage Spectacle

Fri, Dec 21, 2007

“Hypnotically beautiful...a visual resonance that you find all too rarely on stage.”—Financial Times

In what is sure to be one of the most talked-about theater events of the season, Italian director Romeo Castellucci and his company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio bring their surreal, visually spectacular production Hey Girl! to Columbus for the show’s U.S. premiere at the Wexner Center January 15–16.

Exploring the individual yet universal drama of women, the production unfolds in a series of startling stage pictures, complete with the heroine emerging fully formed from a chrysalis. The protagonists go on to explore themes of isolated vulnerability as a Juliet without a Romeo, and of powerful determination as a Joan of Arc, ready to sacrifice herself for a greater cause. The vivid stage images are enhanced by an atmospheric soundscape and starkly dramatic lighting, creating an enigmatic and surreal experience. The show is intended for mature audiences.

Male volunteers from the community are needed for a short section of this show. No experience is necessary.

The Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio was founded in 1981. The group’s body of workreflects the founders’ interest in the idea of theater as art, capable of combining all artistic forms to communicate directly with the senses and the mind.
