Join us for a screening of James Redford’s gripping documentary Paper Tigers and stay for a discussion about trauma-informed education practices—techniques that acknowledge the extent to which poverty, hunger, and abuse challenge a child’s ability to learn. The issue is not only complex but close to home: according to a recent report from the United Way of Central Ohio, one in five school-aged children in Franklin County lives in poverty, putting them at risk for the kind of chronic stress that has been shown to physiologically (and adversely) alter the brain.
Paper Tigers follows the lives of students and staff at Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, Washington. Lincoln was the first high school in the country to adopt trauma-informed teaching and discipline practices, resulting in an 85% reduction in suspensions and 40% reduction in expulsions in the first year. After four years, their graduation rate increased fivefold. This is an opportunity to examine one city’s response to a crisis shared by many communities, including our own. This experience is ideal for all interested in trauma-informed education practices, including teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community members.
