Robert A. M. Stern

Architect, teacher, and writer Robert A. M. Stern has done much to shape the face of contemporary architecture. Tonight he lectures about his work as part of the Mood River Lecture Series. In the 1970s and 80s, Robert Stern's skillful, witty adaptations of classical devices such as moldings, columns, and arches placed him in the first wave of postmodern architects alongside Robert Venturi and Michael Graves. Raised in Brooklyn and schooled at Columbia and Yale, Stern is currently Dean of the Yale School of Architecture and Senior Partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects. The author of many books, including New Directions in American Architecture (1969) and Modern Classicism (1988), he hosted an eight-part PBS documentary series, Pride of Place: Building the American Dream (1986). His work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Recent projects include the Feature Animation Building for The Walt Disney Company (1994) and the ongoing renovation of Times Square in New York City.
