During the summer break/pandemic shutdown of the Ohio State campus, Erin Hoppe, the former executive director of Art Possible Ohio, current Ph.D candidate at the Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise, and self-described "bird nerd" has developed a new podcast to share insight on the work and societal ripples of arts administrators.
Arts Admin/s, Who? explores the intersections of identity, lifelong learning, and cultural policy through the voices of artists and arts administrators, who share personal stories of what they do, how they develop professionally, and how their efforts can shape policy affecting the creative sector. It's a practical, candid primer for those considering a career path behind the scenes in arts presentation or education, as well as an easy and endearing listen for anyone with an interest in the arts.
So far, Hoppe has connected with Ohio State alum Morgan Green on her work for online art education program Sketchbook Skool and ways to bring creativity into your life; spoken to Dr. Rachel Skaggs, Lawrence and Isabel Barnett Associate Professor of Arts Management, about the sociology of work and how artists can make a living pursuing their passion; and talked to old friend Janelle Hallet about her work as Organizational Programs Coordinator for the Ohio Arts Council. Hoppe has also shared the conversation she moderated with Australia's Back to Back Theatre (pictured at top of page), a company whose work is developed through collaboration with its intellectually disabled stock cast, following a performance of The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes at the Wex back in February. On the home page for the podcast, guests also share recommendations for things to read and artists to find.
