Join us as we look back at some of our favorite moments from the past year.
It's not everyday or every year that Columbus shares a world premiere with the highest-profile film fest on the circuit, but that's how 2018 got started the Wex. A Thousand Thoughts: A Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet came to Mershon Auditorium on January 25 for one performance, immediately following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
The remarkable work, made possible in part by a 2017-18 Wexner Center Artist Residency Award, traces the radical string quartet's four-decade history and the unique cultural and personal impact of their music. Its mix of onscreen images and live narration and soundtrack produced moments ranging from the entertaining to the deeply profound. A Thousand Thoughts was singled out as one of the highlights of Sundance by numerous critics, including Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times, Sam Adams from Slate, and Tom Brook from the BBC. More recently, it took a spot on the list of the best documentaries of the year from Vox writer Alissa Wilkinson. Here at Mershon in January, it left an audience in the hundreds silent and spellbound.
Unlike traditional films that play out only on screen, A Thousand Thoughts (and most of Green's films) will probably never show up on Netflix. If you missed it here, there's still a chance to catch it on tour (the closest nearby stop is Richmond, Indiana in February). For those who can't make the tour or who want to revisit their experience seeing A Thousand Thoughts live at the Wex, we're happy to share a playlist created before the Wex show with a variety of music from Kronos, including several tracks that were performed as part of the film's soundtrack and some notable collaborations with artists like Nine Inch Nails and Tom Waits. As the holidays roll around, it's highly recommended for car trips and temporary breaks from seasonal tunes.
