WexCast: Carlos Reygadas

May 09, 2019

Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas in a still from his 2018 film Our Time

At the end of March, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas visited the Wex to present his latest work, Our Time, a portrait of toxic masculinity starring the filmmaker and his real-life wife, Natalia. Following the film, the director had an in-depth conversation with Laura Poldalsky from Ohio State’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Film Studies Program about his personal approach to making films and how it differs from the norm, along with his distinct use of sound and some unexpected inspirations for his work. For this WexCast, we share the filmmaker’s post-screening talk with Podalsky and the audience.

Note: There is some ambient noise accompanying questions from the audience so we’ve cut portions out where possible. Our apologies for the distraction.

"I just make films about presence, about what I feel, what is there in front of me. And there’s many meanings, many things going on, and most of them aren’t pushed by me, but they’re captured by this funnel which is the camera and the sound device."
