Hear from New York–based multimedia artist Liz Magic Laser in this cosponsored talk that explores how her latest work is addressing the contemporary drive to maximize human performance.

Laser intervenes in semipublic spaces (bank vestibules, movie theaters, and newsrooms) and engages everyday people in works that question the technological systems that increasingly govern our behavior. In this talk the artist will discuss some of her most recent projects, which have involved applying a reality-television format to explore the workings of the gig economy (In Real Life, 2019); using personality-assessment techniques to unravel sociopolitical tensions (Handle/Poignée, 2018); and conducting a workshop that employs new age and biohacking training practices currently in vogue at corporate retreats (User Friendly, 2019).

About the Artist

Liz Magic Laser's work has been shown at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (2019); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2018); Malmö Konsthall, Sweden (2017); and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015), among many other venues. Most recently she exhibited In Real Life at FACT, Liverpool, UK (2019).
