Legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb joins us for one of a limited number of appearances to discuss the new biography Crumb: A Cartoonist’s Life.
Robert Crumb is without question one of the most influential and controversial cartoonists in the history of the medium. In the 1960s and 1970s he helped redefine comics through his series Zap Comix and iconic characters such as Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. His 2009 graphic novel The Book of Genesis reached number one on the New York Times best sellers list, further cementing his legacy as one of the world’s great cartoonists. Crumb’s life and family were chronicled in Terry Zwigoff’s 1994 documentary Crumb, which received numerous awards including the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Organized and cosponsored by Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, this special event features Crumb and author Dan Nadel in conversation about his new biography of the artist, Crumb: A Cartoonist’s Life (Scribner, 2025), which captures Crumb’s remarkable life and work. The talk is moderated by Sampada Aranke, associate professor of art history and comparative studies at Ohio State. (program approx. 60 mins.)
A one-hour book singing by Nadel follows the conversation. Preorder a copy of Crumb: A Cartoonist’s Life signed by Crumb through the Wexner Center store.
