(Nalan Kumarasamy, 2013)

Amrutha Kunapulli’s Worlding Tamil Cinema Book Launch

Three people sit closely together in a car; the man in the center wears sunglasses, the man on the left points forward, and the woman on the right leans on the central man's shoulder.

Join us for a talk about Kunapulli’s new book tracking the globalization of Tamil cinema, followed by a screening of the gangster comedy Soodhu Kavvum.

Ohio State Assistant Professor of Theater, Film, and Media Arts Amrutha Kunapulli’s new book Worlding Tamil Cinema (Routledge) looks at trends in Tamil-language filmmaking that are reaching towards global audiences in cinemas and through streaming. Kunapulli will discuss Worlding Tamil Cinema and introduce the delightful and popular Tamil film Soodhu Kavvum. Winner of the Best Film at the 2013 South Indian International Movie Awards, Soodhu Kavvum is a fun small-time-criminals-do-everything-wrong movie and is one of Tamil cinema’s most popular dark comedies. In Tamil with English subtitles. (program approx. 150 mins., DCP)

After the film, Kunapulli will take questions about her book and discuss the film with the audience.
