Midnight Cowboy

(John Schlesinger, 1969)

New Restoration

Two men are walking along a bridge. One wears a black cowboy hat and a tan buckskin jacket, the other has his hair slicked back and is wearing a dark overcoat.

Midnight Cowboy remains an unforgettable time capsule of late-1960s New York City and one of the grittiest depictions of the city ever put on film.

The Oscar-winning film stars Jon Voight as Joe Buck, a wannabe hustler who arrives in New York from Texas hoping to cash in with high-society ladies. Instead, he gets a bigger bite of the Big Apple than he can handle and quickly finds himself relying on the street smarts of the desperate and down-and-out Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman). Together, they try to scratch out a living, squatting in an abandoned building, while trying to restart Joe’s career as a hustler.

Midnight Cowboy includes a memorable recreation of a Warhol-esque Factory party, complete with real Warhol superstars including Viva, Ultra Violet, and Joe Dallesandro. The film was nominated for seven Oscars and won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay (Waldo Salt). Fun fact: this late-60s classic is the only X-rated film to win the Best Picture award—the rating then simply meant a film was intended for adults only before being coopted by the pornography industry. (113 mins., 4K DCP)
