Simply put, Kim Deitch is among the pantheon of American underground cartoonists who began their careers in the 1960s. Join the legendary Deitch and Wexner Center Film/Video Director Dave Filipi for a conversation about his interests and influences, with special attention to his most recent graphic novel Reincarnation Stories (2019) as part of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC).
His fans are drawn to his delirious body of work that often draws upon his personal obsessions with early 20th century pop culture including early animation, westerns, movie serials, ephemera, and more. His Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2002) was named one of Time’s “100 Best Graphic Novels Ever Written” and he has been awarded an Eisner and Inkpot Award.
This year’s four-day CXC festival is completely online with events also being presented by Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, Columbus College of Art & Design, Columbus Museum of Art, and Columbus Metropolitan Library.
