Signs of Remembering: Women’s Resistance in Middle Eastern and North African Documentaries

Six images, from left a woman holding a military weapon, two women sharing a book out in the fields, multiple female students sitting behind their desks in the classroom, a woman pouring into a bucket, multiple well dressed women looking down, and a woman in hijab resting her arm on a tree trunk looking up.
Past and present collide in six films that chronicle the essential role of women in fighting for their own emancipation across generations.

Signs of Remembering: Women’s Resistance in Middle Eastern and North African Documentaries gathers an intergenerational group of filmmakers whose work brings visibility to vital but suppressed histories. The series explores stories and issues that emerge out of the overlapping movements for women’s liberation, labor rights, and decolonization in the Middle East and North Africa. Each film turns to question official narratives—ultimately challenging their gaps and fissures—to envision more just futures.

Organized by the Wexner Center for the Arts and curated by Ohio State History of Art graduate student Dareen Hussein and Film/Video Curatorial Assistant Layla Muchnik-Benali.

This series was made possible with support from the Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme Fellowship.
