40 Acres

(R.T. Thorne, 2024)

Introduced with readings by Scott Woods and Aaron Alsop

A Black and Native American family stands in a field looking into the distance.

Follow a family protecting their Black-owned farm as humanity’s resources dwindle in this post-apocalyptic thriller.

Hailey Freeman (Danielle Deadwyler) is the head of a family whose Black-owned farm has been in her family’s possession since her ancestors settled in rural Canada following the Civil War. But in this dystopian future, food is scarce, and her family must regularly fight off intruders. When her eldest son falls for someone from beyond their homestead, the family becomes even more vulnerable to a well-armed militia bent on taking their land. (113 mins., DCP)
