Brazil

(Terry Gilliam, 1985)

Introduced with readings by Scott Woods and Ed Plunkett

A man stretches an older person's cheeks widely. The older person wears makeup and a metal helmet.

Terry Gilliam’s dystopian fantasy has become one of the most revered cult films in cinema history.

One of the most singular satirical visions of a dystopian future, Brazil stars Jonathan Pryce as Sam Lowry, a beaten-down government employee living and working in a polluted, bureaucratic, totalitarian state. Only his fantasies of an imagined love can give him pleasure. When he discovers a that clerical error in his office resulted in the execution of the wrong man, he finds himself caught in a series of events that lead to him being branded an enemy of the state. Starring Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, and Ian Holm. (143 mins., DCP)
