(Otto e mezzo, Federico Fellini, 1963)

New Restoration

Black-and-white still of Guido (Marcello Mastroianni) sitting with legs outstretched, wearing a black suit, tie, and hat. A row of brightly lit windows is behind him.

Following the success of La dolce vita, Fellini overcame creative block by casting Marcello Mastroianni as his alter ego in this influential drama about the power of fantasy and memory.

Mastroianni plays Guido, a famous Italian director grappling with self-doubt and marital difficulties while trying to get his science-fiction epic off the ground. A work beloved by filmmakers to this day, is tour-de-force look at filmmaking and the creative process filled with surreal and erotic dream sequences. A reference to the number of films Fellini had made by that point in his career, won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design. (138 mins., 4K DCP)
