Antonioni’s first fully English-language film captures London's swinging “mod” scene of the 1960s with a score by Hancock that alternates between groovy blues and funky jazz.
Blow-Up follows a fashion photographer (David Hemmings) who inadvertently captures a murder on film during a photo shoot. Hancock’s score captures the sounds of the time in ways that have reverberated for decades, including through his song “Bring Down the Birds”—sampled by Deee-Lite for the main riff of their iconic 1990 dance hit “Groove Is in the Heart.” The film is also legendary for an incendiary on-screen performance of “Stroll On” by The Yardbirds featuring both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on guitar. Based on an inventive short story by Julio Cortázar, this highwater mark of modernist, international cinema also features Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, Jane Birkin, and the model Verushka.
