Soundtrack by Herbie Hancock

Six images from the Herbie Hancock film series
Eight films showcasing some of the legendary Herbie Hancock's original scores.

Pianist and bandleader Herbie Hancock's influence on music is overwhelming. His wildly eclectic career has spanned decades, resulting in 14 Grammys, an Oscar, Kennedy Center honors, and a legacy still influencing musicians to this day.

When not playing with Donald Byrd or the Miles Davis Quintet, or creating such groundbreaking hits as “Chameleon” (on 1973’s Head Hunters) or “Rockit” (on 1983’s Future Shock), he also composed some of the most memorable soundtracks in cinema and music history. From the radical funk of Death Wish (1974) to scoring one of the definitive jazz movies with ‘Round Midnight (1986), Hancock’s career in cinema provides the inspiration for this wide-ranging series that offers a snapshot of (primarily) Black film history in an unconventional way.

All films screen in 35mm and will feature some surprise clips of Herbie Hancock in action before the screenings!

Keep your eyes peeled on wexarts.org: the revolutionary film The Spook Who Sat By the Door, featuring a powerful Hancock score, will screen at the Wex after it’s done being restored by the Library of Congress!
