Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero

(Eric Mahoney, 2019)

Brainiac

One of the most distinctive and innovative Ohio rock bands of the 1990s, Brainiac never lost its Dayton pride after achieving cult status and opening for Beck.

Ahead of their time for marrying a pop sensibility with a ferociously experimental sound, Brainiac’s spasmodic live shows made fans out of anyone who saw them. But just as things were peaking for the band, charismatic front man Tim Taylor died in a car accident in 1997.

Directed and introduced by Ohio State alum Eric Mahoney, Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero gives a primer of the band’s brief life, examines its legacy and influence, and shows how people survive and cope with the loss of a loved one. Featuring interviews with Steve Albini, Fred Armisen, Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole), Matt Berninger (The National), Roger “Buzz” Osborne (The Melvins), and David Yow (The Jesus Lizard), among many others. (108 mins., DCP)
