On Friday and Saturday, August 9–10, director Eric Mahoney will visit the Wex with his new doc Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero. The film chronicles the too-brief life of the Dayton band Brainiac, which was gaining major label attention when frontman Tim Taylor died in a car accident in 1997.
For a playlist to set the scene for Mahoney's film, we turned to Michael Goodson, the Wex's Senior Curator of Exhibitions, who spent his formative years in Dayton and even played on a bill with Brainiac when he was in the band Pure Plastic Tree. Michael put together an epic list of tracks that highlight not only Brainiac's sound, but the vital contributions the city of Dayton and the state of Ohio has made to music history. Artists include The Breeders, New Bomb Turks, Scrawl, Guided by Voices, Enon, Devo, and, of course, Ohio Players. Turn it up.
