The Camera Is Ours: Britain’s Women Documentary Makers (1935–67)

New Restoration

The profile of a white woman with long, brownish blonde hair. She holds a book titled Modern Cookery and looks at her reflection in the bottom of a frying pan hanging above her.

Early British documentary developed a distinctive aesthetic thanks to the work of numerous female directors, celebrated in this program of shorts.

Join us for an afternoon of short films from the pioneering female directors of the British documentary movement in this revelatory program of new restorations from the British Film Institute. Spanning the years 1935 through 1967, the films pay tribute to the wartime “Housewives of Britain,” explore the mysteries of motherhood, capture the lives of working-class women in their own voices, and more. (97 mins., 4K DCP)
