Please note: Collective is available only to viewers in Ohio. We’re offering a sliding scale for our Unorthodocs screenings in an effort to keep our programming accessible to all people, especially in a moment of extreme financial uncertainty. Please consider your needs and abilities—as well as those of others—when choosing how much to pay for this screening. We are very grateful for the generous support of patrons with the means to chip in a bit more in these precarious times.
As bracing, relevant, and powerful as any film you’ll see this year, Collective begins with a fire at a Bucharest rock concert in 2015 that left 27 dead and 180 injured—and then provides an eye-opening look at a failing health-care system.
As more burn victims from the fire begin dying in hospitals from wounds that were not life threatening, a doctor blows the whistle to a team of investigative reporters. One revelation leads to another as the journalists start to uncover vast health-care fraud tied to government corruption. When a new health minister is appointed, he tries to offer unprecedented transparency which only reveals the larger obstacles he faces with the looming far-right government.
Following journalists, whistleblowers, burn victims, and government officials, Collective is an uncompromising documentary look at the impact of investigative journalism at its best as well as how governmental corruption can force the medical industry to abandon its most vulnerable patients. (109 mins., digital video)
This presentation also includes a conversation between filmmaker Alexander Nanau and K. Austin Collins, a Vanity Fair film critic, programmer for the New York Film Festival, and a creator of crosswords for the New Yorker.
