Como Vivimos

(How We Live, Aggie Ebrahimi Bazaz, 2024)

Aggie Ebrahimi Bazaz in person

Midwest Premiere

A farm worker wearing a hoodie and baseball hat walks through a field carrying a hoe.

A timely examination of citizenship, immigration, and unwieldy laws.

Set in California's Central Valley, Como Vivimos (How We Live) follows the complicated lives of Mexican American farm workers, who plant, tend, and harvest the fruits and vegetables that appear in grocery stores around the United States. Due to an antiquated set of policies around migrant worker housing, families must uproot their lives every December, move out of their apartments, remove their children from school, and move at least 50 miles away for three months. Many families are forced to travel 2,000 miles back to Mexico. Despite their US citizenship and decades of contributions, this annual forced migration obstructs families’ abilities to participate fully as citizens. By following the experiences of these resident families, Como Vivimos raises questions about labor, housing, education rights, and, ultimately, what it means to be an American citizen. In Spanish and English with English subtitles. (73 mins., DCP)

Supported by Film/Video Studio residencies between 2018 and 2024.
