Dottie Gets Spanked | Parting Glances

(Todd Haynes, 1993)

(Bill Sherwood, 1986)

35MM Print | Double Feature

Two black-and-white film stills. On the left, a man holds a woman over his knee to spank her. On the right, a man (Steve Buscemi) wearing a leather jacket peaks over his black sunglasses.

This double feature includes an early film by queer cinema icon Todd Haynes and a bittersweet romance set in New York during the AIDS epidemic.

Inspired in part by the director’s childhood fascination with I Love Lucy, Dottie Gets Spanked is a provocative, heartfelt tale of a young, artistic boy and his obsession with the lead actress of 1950s-style sitcom The Dottie Show. A past Wex guest and Artist Residency Award recipient, Todd Haynes is the director of such films as Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), Velvet Goldmine (1998), and Carol (2015). (30 mins., digital video) One of the earliest films to deal realistically with the subject of AIDS, Parting Glances is a witty romantic comedy about a gay couple forced to examine their relationship as one prepares to leave for Africa on an extended work assignment. They are surrounded by their unconventional circle of friends, including Michael (played by Steve Buscemi in his first major film role), who is dying of AIDS. Parting Glances was director Bill Sherwood’s only feature-length film before his death due to AIDS complications in 1990. (90 mins., 35mm)
