Dream Life

(La vie rêvée, Mireille Dansereau, 1972)

New Restoration

A close-up still of a woman with her face painted, in a pattern of green, orange, white, black, red, and yellow, to look like an ornate mask.

This stunning portrait of the interior lives of women reveals the limits of the early sexual revolution.

Aesthetically and narratively daring indie feature Dream Life follows two women who strike up a fast friendship while working at a film production company. Over the course of a sunny Montreal summer, the free-spirited pair support each other through challenges at work, family situations, and their evolving expectations of finding the perfect man. The first feature film directed by a woman in Quebec, this classic of 1970s feminist cinema and New Wave style is ripe for rediscovery. (90 mins., 2K DCP)
