Él

(Luis Buñuel, 1953)

New Restoration

Black-and-white still of a man in a suit. He sits on a staircase, holding a cane and looking downward, as if in deep thought.

The famed surrealist Luis Buñuel turns his avant-garde eye on themes of suspicion, jealousy, and madness in his masterpiece Él.

Considered one of Luis Buñuel’s very best films, Él stars Arturo de Córdova as Don Francisco, a wealthy, principled, middle-aged bachelor. One day in church, Francisco becomes obsessed with the beautiful Gloria Vilalta (Delia Garcés)—Buñuel compared the cinematic moment to a “falcon spying a dove from above.” Francisco pursues Gloria, eventually convincing her to break off her engagement and marry him instead. But, once married, his obsession quickly turns to paranoia. Convinced she’s cheating on him, his jealousy triggers a slow spiral into madness. (92 mins., 4K DCP)

"It’s simply the story of a paranoiac who, like a poet, is born, not made."
