Elisabeth Subrin: Three Films

Elisabeth Subrin in person
Cinema Columbus

Three images from the film program: Close up of a woman with dark curly hair wearing a dark jacket and white shirt, the second image is Close up of a woman with glasses and dark hair talking on the telephone, and the third image is Image of a woman with brown curly hair sitting on a chair in the middle of a room. She is bent over with her elbows on her knees. She is wearing a pink dress. A bed and dresser are in the background, there are pictures hanging on the walls. To her right is a checkered armchair

Cinema Columbus is back, and we’re thrilled to welcome Elisabeth Subrin for a trio of short films that radically examine film history through a feminist lens.

Brooklyn-based filmmaker and artist Elisabeth Subrin explores female identity and representation in narrative, documentary, experimental, and gallery-based work. Subrin will introduce and discuss this selection of short films, which includes her latest, Maria Schneider, 1983.

We’re excited to partner with the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), Columbus Museum of Art, COSI, Drexel Theatre, Gateway Film Center, Lincoln Theatre, McConnell Arts Center, Palace Theatre, and Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse in presenting this event. Check out the rest of the festival schedule.

Program lineup

Maria Schneider, 1983 (2022)
This short restages a confrontational interview with the iconic French actress best known as the female lead in Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial Last Tango in Paris (1972). Casting contemporary actresses Manal Issa, Aïssa Maïga, and Isabel Sandoval as Schneider, Subrin recontextualizes Schneiders statements about the sexist film industry to illustrate how little has changed, even post #MeToo. (25 mins., DCP)

Shulie (1997)
A landmark film, Shulie is a reimagined documentary about trailblazing feminist Shulamith Firestone. (36 mins., DCP)

Sweet Ruin (2008)
This riveting adaptation of the unrealized script for Michelangelo Antonioni’s Technically Sweet stars Gaby Hoffman in the roles intended for Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider. (10 mins., DCP)

Additional Cinema Columbus events happening at the Wex include:

Call Me Dancer (Leslie Shampaine and Pip Gilmour, 2023)

Leslie Shampaine and Manish Chauhan in person
$10 all audiences
The exciting new documentary follows Manish Chauhan, a young, talented street dancer from Mumbai whose parents insist that he follow a traditional path. While he is determined to be a professional dancer, the odds are stacked against him. (84 mins., DCP)
