Escape from New York

(John Carpenter, 1981)

Preceded by Black Panther Fable (Kieran Murphy, 2020)

A man in an eyepatch smoking a cigarette looks skeptically at the camera

Join us at the South Drive-In Theatre for John Carpenter’s 1981 dystopian cult classic—plus a locally made short film featured at Ohio Shorts.

Escape from New York looks ahead to (gulp) 1997 when a crime-ridden U.S. of A. has converted the island of Manhattan into one big maximum-security prison. When Air Force One crashes onto the heavily fortified island, imprisoned master criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 24 hours to rescue the president, earning a pardon for himself if successful. The film’s memorable cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Isaac Hayes, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Donald Pleasence as The President! Carpenter composed and performed the film’s signature score. (99 mins., 4K DCP)

Kieran Murphy’s Black Panther Fable (2020) finds the Marvel hero T'Challa in a moment of danger. Will he make it out alive? Murphy’s earlier short film John Wick was shown in Ohio Shorts 2020’s Youth Division. (1:35 mins., DCP)
