Good Morning

(Yasujiro Ozu, 1959)

Ages 8 and up

Family Programming

A young boy sits at a table holding chopsticks over a bowl with his tongue sticking out.

The whole family will delight in this playful portrait of childhood by one of Japan’s most-revered directors.

Good Morning is the great Yasujiro Ozu’s lightly satirical portrait of family life in consumerist Japan. The film follows two young brothers who take a vow of silence when their parents refuse to buy them a new television set. Told in the gentle rhythms of everyday life, the film critiques consumerism in the suburbs of Tokyo. Full of subtle gags and a stunning sense of color, the lighthearted film is a rich portrait of an intergenerational family’s relationships. In Japanese with English subtitles. (93 mins., DCP)
