This spotlight on two documentaries by New Day Films cofounders Julia Reichert and Jim Klein investigates female socialization and the intersection of women’s and labor movements.
Growing Up Female is the very first feature-length film of the modern women's movement and was selected for the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2011. Considered controversial and invigorating on its release, the film takes a personal look into the lives of six women, ages four to 35, and the forces that shape them—teachers, counselors, advertisements, music, and the institution of marriage. (52 mins., DCP)
Told through the eyes of three women—Stella, Sylvia, and Kate—Union Maids chronicles the fight to form industrial unions in the first half of the 20th century. The lively and humorous storytellers recount leaving their small farms for the promise of greater job opportunities in Chicago, eventually joining the rank-and-file labor movement in the battle for better conditions for factory workers, especially women. (48 mins., DCP)
